Jean Ann Fausser Bio
Welcome
to my website. I am a working studio artist now but have traveled a circuitous
path to being able to spend full time working on art. My original major in
college was art but I had three children that I needed to support so I altered
my course and got my BA in English and did my graduate studies in English
also. This allowed me more flexibility in the job market. After working in
several fields I opened a childrens bookstore which I operated for 10 years.
Upon closing the bookstore about 11 years ago I began setting up my studio and
acquiring skills in the fiber arts and surface design areas. During the
previous years I could only work part time as a watercolorist. With my
newfound freedom I have been exploring various media and working to create a
body of work using mixed media and surface design techniques.
The focus
of much of my work has been an exploration of unseen, sometimes microscopic,
images in nature. My use of materials is often non traditional. I especially
like using soft materials to depict hard objects. Textures in nature and in
the work itself are of primary interest. I am an admirer of fine art crafts
and employ many of the materials and techniques in my work.
I start
with an idea and then select the materials I wish to use. It is then that I
must devise the techniques to solve the problems presented by using
nontraditional materials in a mixed media presentation. It's about process and
problem solving for me in great measure. The craftsmanship exhibited in fine
art craft such as glass art, knotting, bead weaving, wood working and basket
making is as much an influence on my work as is painting and sculpture.
My work has
been included in Fiber Works in Oklahoma City four times, Fiber Focus in St.
Louis twice, in Art Quilts at the Sedgwick in Philadelphia, Voices in Fabric in
Oklahoma City, Vision Makers in Oklahoma three times, Edge Art Now in Oklahoma City three times.
In the fall of 2005 my work was in a solo show in Oklahoma City and Tulsa entitled Fettered Spirits. My work is in private collections in Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania and is in the recently completed Reynolds Boy Scout Resource
Center in Tulsa.
